For the first time ever, teams of carpenters and designers have the chance to go head to head in a national competition. To mark 125 years since its foundation, the Swiss Association of Master Carpenters and Furniture Manufacturers (VSSM) has launched the WoodAward 2012. The aim is to promote Switzerland as a production location and bring together Swiss craftsmanship and design. Carpenters, designers and architects were invited to unite idea and execution in a joint product made of wood or wood-based materials. The launch of the WoodAward has attracted interest far beyond the Swiss carpentry community: among the roughly 240 teams taking part, there are many instances of Swiss practitioners working with their colleagues from abroad, from Santa Monica to Tokyo and Milan to London.
The WoodAward 2012 carries total prize money of CHF 30,000. In an anonymous, two-stage process, a high-calibre, seven-member jury has assessed the projects submitted on the basis of various criteria: idea, design concept, execution (design and craftsmanship), practical application and, last but not least, innovation and originality. The exhibition “Hölzer formen” at the ETH Zurich presents 23 objects – from a large clock to a table to exercise equipment for stroke victims – including the winning entries.

An exhibition by the Verband Schweizerischer Schreinermeister und Möbelfabrikanten (VSSM) in collaboration with the Institute gta
